1. 2010 Migration Quotas & New Skilled Migration List
Senator Chris Evans, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship has announced the new quotas for migration to Australia for the 2010/2011 financial year to be as follows:
The overall number of migration places will remain the same as for 2009/2010 with 168 700 places distributed as follows:
113 850 places to be allocated to the skills streams including business skills visas
54 550 places to the family migration visa stream, and 300 to special eligibility visa applications.
The most important change is in the skilled migration visa streams which have been increased with 5 750 places. The emphasis has also been moved from independent / family sponsored / State sponsored skilled migration to Employer Sponsored migration with an increase in 9,000 places for this specific migration stream.
In line with the emphasis change, the Skilled Occupation list will from 1 July 2010 only be applicable to independent / family sponsored / State sponsored skilled migration visa application. The new SOL has also been published and has been reduced to just over 400 occupations representing the old Migration-Occupation-in-Demand list and Critical Skills List with the addition of a number of occupations mainly in teaching and the building industry. Most of the trade occupations are still represented on the list.
This does not imply that a person cannot migrate to Australia if your occupation is not listed on the new SOL, it merely means that until the economy has stabilized and returned to a low unemployment figure, all people who are not listed on the current SOL will have to be sponsored by an Australian employer to migrate to Australia.

2. Offshore skilled independent and family sponsored skilled migration visa applications frozen until 1 July 2010
In anticipation of the new SOL list which will be effective 1 July 2010 all offshore visa applications for skilled migration (not employer sponsored) have been frozen until 1 July 2010. Filings will commence on this date again. It is anticipated that Skilled Migration under the new SOL will be processed within the financial year the application has been filed in.
All applications filed prior to 1 July 2010 which are not on the new SOL are still subject to the processing time announced in February 2010 namely 3 years from the filing date of the application.
3. Employer Sponsored Visas continued but the expected processing time is now 6 months in New South Wales
Employer Sponsored visa applications are still being accepted and processed at all of the visa processing centres (Centres of Excellence) in Perth, Melbourne and in Sydney. However, due to the increased number of these applications being filed, as staff reallocations necessitated by the recent Christmas Island arrivals, the Sydney Centre of Excellence processing times for visa applications filed under the ENS or RSMS visa streams have escalated to about 6 months from the date of application. The Department is currently looking at redistributing the applications made at this office to reduce the processing time.
